Lindsay Ronald Mole, a Cambridge Who’s Who Lifetime member and senior development engineer at Ford Motor Company of Australia Limited, is a trailblazer in the vehicle manufacturing industry. His contributions to the company have led to the successful formulation and advancement of tools intended for Ford automobiles. Many of these instruments are capable of assessing alternate engine coolant thermostat designs or sources.

As a specialist in powertrain cooling and heat management, Mr. Mole has made lasting impressions on the automotive business. In 2006, he spearheaded a series of studies involving University of Melbourne students that focused on vehicle coolant thermostat operations. The research he orchestrated in the test occupied the use of the Ford BA Falcon, which is no longer in production. He has also provided students with resources for investigative analysis and has co-authored a number of articles on the subject of engine cooling systems.

In the analysis, conducted at The University of Melbourne campus, he coordinated a measuring system that monitored the functions of the thermostat, the measurement of the ideal hysteresis curve for the thermostat, and the set up of a typical “in-vehicle” test procedure.

He was also responsible for calculating the dimensions of an “in-vehicle” hysteresis curve in the no-longer produced Ford BA Falcon. This included the monitoring of the ensuing cycling purpose, and determination of transfer function in relation to outputs of coolant flow, pressure and temperature. Mr. Mole’s insight and advice for successful completion of the project prompted the group to determine the best modeling software to use, construct a BA Falcon thermostat model and link the model to the test vehicle for accurate gauging.

Mr. Mole earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Monash University, Caufield campus in 1976. He is a member of the Boy Scouts of Australia, and received the Queen’s Scout Award from the association in 1977. His inclination towards the automotive industry is not limited to the professional arena; Mr. Mole also enjoys motor racing and reading “Motor” and “Automotive News” magazines.
