Cambridge Who’s Who member Carrie Beth Hughes, music supervisor at MTV Networks has made great strides to discover and recognize new talent in the music industry. As the music supervisor for MTV, Hughes finds new music to air on television shows such as The Hills, Newport Harbor, The Real Orange County, The Real World and Road Rules. Each show requires her to find an average of 15 songs to use per episode.

Hughes attributes her success to hard work and a bit of luck. She has held positions at BMG Music Publishing, Universal Records and Dreamworks Records. One day, a friend who worked at a production company mentioned that her company needed help coordinating music. Thinking that the position sounded interesting, Hughes decided to see what the job entailed and accepted the offer. From there she worked her way up to music coordinator and then music supervisor at MTV.

Hughes identifies three reasons for being able to move from coordinator to supervisor so quickly: her knowledge of music, the risk she took by switching companies and taking on a new position and networking. In particular, networking put her in touch with the people who she needed to market her talent, skills and expertise to in order to obtain her current position.

Hughes is constantly listening to artists and seeking new talent at the Roxy and the Viper Room in Los Angeles. When she is not working at MTV, she is busy running her own company, Reflection Music Management. Hughes finds that managing bands, which entails band placement, finding record deals and producing music videos, allows her to have a deeper involvement in the music industry. She currently manages a 4-piece Indie rock band called The Royal Heist.

Hughes holds a bachelor of arts in entertainment business from California State University, and she is a member of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals. She was selected as an industry judge for the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards in 2008 because she is known as a music aficionado and industry influencer.
